Some Spring Inspiration!

As we step into March, it’s hard to believe how quickly the year is moving! With spring on the horizon, this month has already been filled with inspiring moments and meaningful milestones.

On Tuesday, 4th March, I had the privilege of attending the Variety, the Children’s Charity Chairman’s Reception at Soho House. This event was another fantastic celebration of Variety’s 75th year and the incredible work we continue to do. One of the most touching moments of the evening was hearing from 13-year-old George and his mother, Lucy. Their story highlighted how Variety’s support in providing new wheelchairs has transformed George’s life. George’s resilience and achievements are truly remarkable, and I have no doubt his future holds even greater success.

Following George’s speech, I had the honour of addressing the room and announcing that I have happily accepted the role of Honorary Chief Barker for a second consecutive year. This role continues to be a source of immense pride for me, and I look forward to another year of making a real difference to children’s lives.

We also had the joy of presenting the Variety Club Showbusiness Award to the incredible Gloria Hunniford OBE, recognising her outstanding contribution to broadcasting and philanthropy. This prestigious award was presented by her dear friend, Don Black CBE, an Oscar, Tony, Golden Globe, and Laurence Olivier Award-winning lyricist. Gloria, we are so grateful for your continued dedication to Variety and the children we support.

Our Chairman, Prof Jonathan Shalit OBE, and Co-Chair, Tushar Prabhu, hosted a truly special evening, including a tribute to the Variety Golf Society, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. Over the decades, Variety Golf has raised an astonishing £50 million, funding 1,850 Variety Sunshine Coaches and changing countless lives. The evening closed with a speech from Gordon Smith, Chair of our Scottish Committee, who highlighted the fantastic work of Variety Scotland.

Also this month, I am also honoured to continue supporting the incredible work of the Anne Frank Trust, one of the main beneficiaries of the MJBall24, with a £150K donation. The Trust’s vital mission to tackle prejudice through education is one I passionately believe in. Anne Frank’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of kindness, resilience, and standing up against hatred. Together, we stand against antisemitism and all forms of hate, working to build a brighter and more inclusive future.

More events, news, and donations are in the diary… so watch this space!
