As Earth Day approaches, we all begin to think about the bigger issue; the world we live in and the impact we are all having on the precious environment of that world.
I’ve heard lots of people say that they feel like they do enough already, or that we as individuals have little control over what actually happens to the planet – but I just don’t think that’s true anymore.
As so many things in life are being (quite rightly) questioned, we must also question our daily behaviour and habits. Are we doing certain things just because that’s the way we’ve always done them? Could we be making better decisions and tweaking these habits to help reduce our carbon footprints? I think if we drilled down far enough the answer would be yes.
I’m not saying that anyone is perfect – I know I’m not. It’s hard to take a step back sometimes and look at things from a different perspective. Sometimes it might mean a change, or removing ourselves from a comfort zone, but it can be done.
Could the car journey you make be done by walking, or by public transport (I miss sitting on the top deck of a bus!)? Do we need to buy so many clothes? Are we avoiding as much plastic as we possibly can? Should we try sticking a jumper on rather than whacking the heating up a few notches?
They all seem small, and it would be very easy not to think about any of them. But on mass, if all of us try every day to be that little bit better it will make a difference.
I speak from experience; I’ve been very vocal about the challenges I’ve faced in my life. It is extremely easy to get into a rut, but extremely difficult to pull yourself out of it. Once you make one little step, another one follows and before long you notice how far you have come. You look back and question why you ever did certain things in the first place. The habit is broken. You are a better person and the world you have created around you is a better place.
I know we can make a difference if we all act, I love this life and we need to act on climate change before it is too late.
