A Day of Sunshine in Stockport… This Is One of My Favourite Parts of the Job

There are so many rewarding moments in the work I do, but one of my absolute favourite things is presenting a Variety Sunshine Coach. Days like this take me right to the heart of my fundraising, and right to the heart of what Variety, the Children’s Charity, is all about… making a tangible difference to young lives.

Recently I had the enormous pleasure of visiting Pear Tree High School in Cheadle Hulme, where we officially handed over a brand-new Sunshine Coach funded by the Dr Michael Josephson MBE Charity Ball 2024.

To mark the occasion, the school held its first-ever Summer Fair and what a celebration it was! Sunshine smiles all around in sunny Stockport, with plenty of games, laughter, and hot dogs (which went down very well). I was truly touched by the warmth and joy from everyone who attended, and it was a privilege to be welcomed so generously by the staff, pupils and their families.

I was joined on the day by some incredibly special guests – Andy and Suzanne Robinson of the Broome Family Charitable Trust, whose additional support also helped make this donation possible, and Tony Robinson of Progeny Wealth, Variety Patron and valued member of our Grants Committee. I was so proud to share this day with them.

Pear Tree High School is an extraordinary place, purpose-built for young people aged 11–18 with autism, severe learning difficulties, and complex needs. Many of the children come from areas of significant deprivation, and for most, public transport simply isn’t a safe or viable option.

That’s why this coach means so much. It’s not just a vehicle – it’s a lifeline. It will allow the pupils to explore new environments, build confidence, and develop vital life skills out in the community. Whether they’re off to a concert at Bridgewater Hall or on a local outing to build independence, these experiences will stay with them for life.

It’s always a proud moment to see the funds raised at the MJ Ball making a direct and lasting impact. This coach will benefit not just the current cohort, but many more students in the years ahead.

Thank you to Pear Tree High School for such a warm welcome, and to all our supporters who help bring moments like this to life. These are the days that remind me why I do what I do.
